Neil Patrick Harris To Host the Tony Awards
According to Playbill News, How I Met Your Mother and Doogie Howser, M.D. star Neil Patrick Harris has been selected to host the 2009 Tony Awards.The awards, now in their 63rd year, will air June 7th on CBS, live from Radio City Music Hall in New York, and will recognize the best productions and performances of live theater this year.
Billy Elliot the Musical topped the list of nominees with fifteen nominations, followed by Next to Normal, which garnered eleven. Nominees also include Elton John, Angela Lansbury, Jane Fonda, and American Idol's Constantine Maroulis.
Recent hosts of the Tony Awards have been Whoopi Goldberg, Hugh Jackman (who hosted the show three consecutive times), and Rosie O'Donnell. Perhaps Harris will even follow in Jackman's footsteps and go on to host the Oscars!
Harris has a long history with theater, starring in Rent, Cabaret, Sweeney Todd, and other productions. He also recently showcased his hosting talents with the 2009 TV Land Awards this April. Check out a clip from that show:
