This pic is for real peeps! Disturbing, I know….The first time I saw this photo I thought, how could this be? It’s not physically possible for a man to carry a baby. And then I read that the 22 week pregnant man, Thomas Beatie, is a transgendered male. Now it all makes since. Although the image is still a little startling, I’ve got to say, good for him.
Thomas Beatie recently gave an interview to the Advocate explaining who he is, his situation, and why he wanted to carry his own baby.
“I am transgender, legally male, and legally married to Nancy. Unlike those in same-sex marriages, domestic partnerships, or civil unions, Nancy and I are afforded the more than 1,100 federal rights of marriage. Sterilization is not a requirement for sex reassignment, so I decided to have chest reconstruction and testosterone therapy but kept my reproductive rights. Wanting to have a biological child is neither a male nor female desire, but a human desire.
Our situation sparks legal, political, and social unknowns. We have only begun experiencing opposition from people who are upset by our situation. Doctors have discriminated against us, turning us away due to their religious beliefs. Health care professionals have refused to call me by a male pronoun or recognize Nancy as my wife. Receptionists have laughed at us. Friends and family have been unsupportive; most of Nancy’s family doesn’t even know I’m transgender.”
Why he decided to carry his child:
Ten years ago, when Nancy and I became a couple, the idea of us having a child was more dream than plan. I always wanted to have children. However, due to severe endometriosis 20 years ago, Nancy had to undergo a hysterectomy and is unable to carry a child. But after the success of our custom screen-printing business and a move from Hawaii to the Pacific Northwest two years ago, the timing finally seemed right. I stopped taking my bimonthly testosterone injections. It had been roughly eight years since I had my last menstrual cycle, so this wasn’t a decision that I took lightly. My body regulated itself after about four months, and I didn’t have to take any exogenous estrogen, progesterone, or fertility drugs to aid my pregnancy.”
When Thomas got pregnant for the first time he said:
“I ended up having an ectopic pregnancy with triplets. It was a life-threatening event that required surgical intervention, resulting in the loss of all embryos and my right fallopian tube. When my brother found out about my loss, he said, ‘It’s a good thing that happened. Who knows what kind of monster it would have been.’”
Now he’s five months pregnant and said:
“On successfully getting pregnant a second time, we are proud to announce that this pregnancy is free of complications and our baby girl has a clean bill of health. We are happily awaiting her birth, with an estimated due date of July 3, 2008.”
A lot of sites are reporting that this is the world’s first pregnant male–in some ways this is true and in other ways not–it gets kinda complicated. As a transgender, Beatie is genetically and physiologically female (& male)…but his self-identity is male. The world has actually seen transgender pregnancy before. In California, Matt Rice, bore a child by artificial insemination; however, California refused to recognize Rice as a man. In Beatie’s case, his state of Oregon, is recognizing him as a male–thus, in the technicality of it all, it’s the first recognized male pregnancy, but not necessarily the first pregnant man in the world.

Ive seen so many crazy things happen throughout my life, that this is highly believable. i could see how this would be possible. everything that he has said in here makes sense. im only in high school, junior year, but most of the time all of the adults that come around me dont know half of the things that i do. in my eyes, people see it as a law to have the woman give birth. even if others who are considered male can too. like in his situation… but honestly.. laws are made to be bent and broken. people break the laws of physics all the time. for exammple, if the lord wanted us to be able to use the skies freely, dont you think he would have given us wings?? and yet, here we are, soaring through the sky to get from one place to another. if you think hard enough, you can come up with hundreds of other examples and dont hate on people who are different more so than the people you are used to. we are all equal. we are all human. no one human is better than the rest. thats how god sees us, adn thats how we should see eachother.

Even so, bear in mind that this out of the ordinary way to procreate may cause confusion for the child later on. I suggest you be frank from the beginning and hide nothing. Fake or not, all the above comments show that though we have come so far, how complex a society we live in. People are people and will always have opinions about stuff. What matters most is that how you live your life. This person is showing loads of courage going against the normal. If the said person would have been ashamed of what they’re doing and wouldn’t have had the courage to bring it in front of the world, the couple would have had the baby in secret and be done with the whole process.
But lets not all forget, its a small life in the womb (iff all that is said is true). And since God has planned it all, only God has the right to see as to what happens to it.

this is indeed an interesting story, let us put aside the laws of physics for the time being( although i have some questions in my mind regarding how the pregnancy occured- like WHERE the sperm came from) - i have to congratulate u for paving ur own way- and for u to actually go all the way with this pregnancy in today’s society shows either 2 things. ONE- that u just want attention from the media for doing something out of the ordinary and then become famous. or TWO- that u really dont give a u know what what ppl think of u, u just want to live ur life in whatever way u wish.

What an amazing story. I have read the comments and a lot of people are saying negative things.. first off I am a gay woman and having children later in life will be a big challenge. People may think it is selfish for what this couple are doing, but when it comes dwn to it they are obviously dedicated to one another and to having a baby, they will love the kid a lot i imagine and i guess you could argue the kid will be f’d up rahrahrah… but ‘yknow this kinda birth is probably seen as a lot more natural than a gay couple having a kid together. the baby will have a mother and father figure. i dont know that much about transgendered people, but basically they are the opposite sex to what they were born biologically. therefore this dude IS a dude. he is carrying a baby. Firstly, congratulations to the couple on the pregnancy. Children are really the best gift anyone can ever have or give in this world.
Secondly, to the close minded many that are more concerned with “hwo willz teh kid be born?” “whoz sperm wuz used?” and such, that is not the point of all this! Obviously, the child will be born via C-Section. The Sperm was obviously not his as he was born a woman and had surgery to become his now gender. Stop focusing on the small stupidities and look at the big picture.
This is male pregnancy, people. HE is male and is pregnant. Yes, he was born a she but HE is pregnant. Thomas and Nancy will love this child more than anything! This child is so lucky to be born into such a loving and open home. If only every child, hell, EVERYONE was that lucky.
Every day, in my line of work, I see children being abused, neglected and treated like they are family pets, that they are just the accessory needed to prove that a marriage is up to society’s norm. How absolutely wonderful to see that here is a couple that is willing to go against the what society deems “NORMAL” and is having a child in their loving union.
What society deems “NORMAL” is not really so, it is just COMMON. It is COMMON to see kids being born to anybody able of rutting. It is COMMON for only “straight” couples to have kids and yet SOCIETY deems it ABNORMAL for homosexual couples to have kids via artificial insemination, surrogates and adoption. I think that this is a totally wonderful event. It is absolutely amazing, (as a person from the 21st century) I knew as soon as I heard about this man that he is a trans gendered person. For over the last 20 years since the movie Twins, the world has been curious as to if a man can become pregnant. Now that it is, people are scared of what they don’t know. I give my support, and finally from a MANS view he can relate what it is like. I think that he is truly a blessed, and lucky man to have this chance. I am really happy for your family. we all should be able to live the way we choose. It’s ignorant people who make this world a hard place to live in. My family is biracial and i know how hard it can be. I think there is so much more to have differences over then wether someone is transexual,bisexual,gay,transgender,black,white or if a male is having a baby. Look at all these poor kids born by women everyday that don’t want them. Here is a man that wants a family more than anything in the world and will obviously give her a loving home. How can you people say it’s amazing? It’s not amazing. It’s nature. This man is not a “man”. He was born a woman so he has all the reproductive organs which allow him to conceive and carry a baby. I don’t get it, if he/she was ALWAYS passionate about having a child, why did she become a male? And now getting pregnant, feeling manly and womanly at the same time.
